ITAD, WEEE recycling & data destruction — explained

What is ITAD?

IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) is the formal, certified process businesses use to retire computers, laptops, servers and other IT equipment at the end of their working life. It covers everything from collection and data wiping through to component recycling and reselling still-usable hardware.

ITAD matters because retired IT equipment almost always still holds data — customer records, financial information, credentials — and under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, your organisation remains legally responsible for that data even after a device leaves the building. Using an ADISA-certified ITAD provider like RecycleSecure closes that liability gap with a verifiable, documented process.

A properly run ITAD programme also recovers value: refurbished laptops and servers can be resold, and precious metals, plastics and rare-earth elements inside old electronics can be reclaimed rather than mined again.

What is WEEE recycling?

WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment — essentially, anything with a plug, battery or circuit board. The UK's WEEE Regulations 2013 require this equipment to be recycled through an Environment Agency-permitted facility rather than sent to landfill, because electronics contain both valuable recoverable materials and hazardous substances that need controlled handling.

As a registered Environment Agency waste carrier, RecycleSecure processes WEEE to zero-landfill standards, and every collection is documented with the correct legal paperwork:

  • Waste Transfer Notes (WTNs) — required for standard electronic waste movements.
  • Hazardous Waste Consignment Notes (HWCNs) — required for items like CRT monitors, batteries and certain circuit boards classed as hazardous waste.
  • Recycling / destruction certificates — your evidence trail for internal audits and regulatory inspections.

How secure data destruction actually works

Not all "data wiping" is equal. RecycleSecure aligns its data destruction process with ADISA Standard 8.0 and applies internationally recognised technical standards depending on the device and its destination:

  • Software erasure — multi-pass overwriting to NIST SP 800-88 Rev.1 and IEEE 2883-2022, used for hard drives and SSDs destined for resale or reuse.
  • Degaussing — magnetic erasure for traditional spinning hard drives, used where the drive itself won't be reused.
  • Physical shredding — destruction to BS EN 15713, used for drives at end of life or where a client requires guaranteed physical destruction rather than wiping.

Every device is logged by serial number before and after processing, so the certificate you receive maps back to a specific asset — not just a batch total.

Do you need ITAD, or just recycling?

If a device has never held any data — a monitor, a printer, networking cable — straightforward WEEE recycling is enough. But almost anything with storage (laptops, desktops, servers, phones, tablets, photocopiers, and even some smart office equipment) should go through full ITAD with certified data destruction first.

UK-wide IT recycling coverage

RecycleSecure collects and processes IT equipment for businesses right across the United Kingdom — England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Whether you need a single laptop collected from a London office, a multi-site refresh spanning Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds, or a full data centre decommission in Scotland, our logistics network and ADISA-certified process work the same way wherever you're based: secure pickup, certified destruction, and full paperwork.

Common questions, answered in full

What actually happens to my data?

Every device is logged on arrival, its storage is wiped or physically destroyed to ADISA-aligned standards, and the result is verified before a certificate is issued against that device's serial number. Nothing leaves our custody until it's confirmed unrecoverable.

Does it cost anything, or can I get paid?

Quotes are always free. For equipment with resale value — working laptops, recent servers, networking kit — we can offer value credits or buy-back against future collections, reducing or offsetting your disposal costs.

What if we get audited?

Every collection generates a full audit trail: an asset manifest, destruction certificates per device, Waste Transfer Notes or Hazardous Waste Consignment Notes, and recycling certificates — all available through the client portal whenever your auditors need them.

What about mixed or unknown equipment?

Not sure what you've got in the store cupboard? We're happy to send someone to assess it, or you can send photos. If it's IT or electronic equipment, we can almost certainly take it — and we'll tell you honestly if something falls outside what we handle.

How does collection actually work?

You get a free quote within 24 hours, agree a collection date, and our GPS-tracked vehicles and BS 7858-vetted technicians handle the rest — from a single box of laptops to a full multi-floor office clearance.

What actually happens to the hardware?

Working equipment is refurbished and resold, extending its life and reducing e-waste. Everything else is broken down at an Environment Agency-permitted facility so materials like metals and plastics are recovered instead of going to landfill.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of recycling does RecycleSecure do?

We specialise only in IT and electronic equipment: computers, laptops, servers, monitors, phones, printers, networking gear and hard drives. We don't collect household waste, garden waste, glass, paper or general rubbish — this is IT and electronics recycling for businesses.

What is ITAD and why do I need it?

IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) is the certified, secure process of retiring end-of-life IT equipment — wiping data, recycling components, and remarketing usable assets. Under UK GDPR, your organisation stays liable for data on devices even after disposal, so using an ADISA-certified provider matters.

Is RecycleSecure GDPR compliant?

Yes. We align with ADISA Standard 8.0, recognised by the UK Information Commissioner's Office under the UK GDPR Certification Scheme. Every device gets a certificate of destruction and full chain-of-custody documentation.

Which areas of the UK do you serve?

All of them. RecycleSecure provides IT recycling and data destruction collections across the whole of the United Kingdom — England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland — from single-site offices to multi-site national roll-outs and data centre decommissions.

Do you provide Hazardous Waste Consignment Notes?

Yes. We're a registered Environment Agency waste carrier and issue compliant Hazardous Waste Consignment Notes (HWCNs) and Waste Transfer Notes (WTNs) for every collection, available 24/7 via our client portal.

Is the quote free and how fast can you collect?

Yes — quotes are free with no obligation, and we respond within 24 hours. Most collections are scheduled within a few working days; larger office clearances or data centre decommissions are arranged around your operations.

What data destruction standards do you use?

We align with ADISA Standard 8.0 and apply NIST SP 800-88 Rev.1 / IEEE 2883-2022 software erasure, degaussing, and BS EN 15713 physical shredding depending on the device and whether it's being resold or destroyed. Every device is logged by serial number.

Can I get money back for old equipment?

Often, yes. Working laptops, recent servers and networking equipment can carry resale value, which we credit back against your collection — reducing or fully offsetting the cost of your ITAD project.

Do you handle full data centre decommissions?

Yes. We manage full or partial data centre decommissioning — racks, servers, storage arrays and networking hardware — with on-site data destruction available where your security policy requires it.

What industries do you work with?

We work across corporate offices, public sector and government bodies, healthcare and the NHS, education, financial services, legal firms, retail, and data centres — tailoring our process to each sector's compliance requirements.

Ready to clear out your old IT equipment?

Free quote in under 24 hours. No obligation. UK-wide collections.
